Papeete, Tahiti

March 6, 2025

Today was another day of diving for me and Kathy enjoyed the pool in the morning. The weather was partly cloudy which is perfect pool weather for Kathy. I did 2 more dives and I have to say that I am not impressed with the diving in Papeete. The coral is healthy and lots of fish but the water is murky so not the best visibility. Plus wall dives are not my favorite. There was not much picture worthy today so I only have 2 to share.

The little family of gray fish and the divers above us on our wall dive.

When we surfaced from the second dive it was raining which made it a little chilly. The good thing about islands is that rain never lasts long before it passes over so by the time I got back to the dock and cleaned off my equipment the rain had mostly passed. I met Kathy at the pool and went for a quick swim and then we went to lunch. Almost everything in Tahiti is imported so the prices are incredibly high. I had a “gourmet” burger for lunch for $37 and Kathy had a fish sandwich for $28. They don’t have Diet Coke here so I had Coke Zero and the restaurant charges you $7.60 for one. If you buy them at the gift shop in the hotel they are $4.60. If you were staying here for a while it could get very expensive.

This is the infinity pool that has a sandy bottom and is fresh water and has a view of Moorea. Unfortunately not much sun today.

After lunch we went back up to the reception area and read for a couple of hours. I managed to take a nap but it was difficult as there is construction going on right below the reception area and there was lots of noise today. The hotel is re-doing their main pool and this will be ongoing until September.

We walked around the property some and checked out the turtles in the turtle rehab pool. The turtle rehab pool is where they put flotation devices on the turtles that have cracked shells to help them heal. It looks like the turtles have t-shirts on. We sat on loungers by the waters edge and watched all the rowers go by. There was no sunset due to the overcast day.

We skipped dinner again since we had a big lunch and they really don’t have a lot of choices for dinner. They have a fancy restaurant on the premises but it was way more food than we wanted and as you can imagine the prices are crazy.

Tomorrow we board the ship. We have a 12:30 boarding time. So we figure we will sleep in and then pack up and grab a taxi to the port.

  1. Are you on another Viking cruise? We have not booked any for this year. Moving from Sebring to Bradenton. Building a house which should be finished in July. Miss seeing you. Hope to see you on another adventure.

  2. Now… Based on that information… I’m gonna have to live vicariously through your pictures onto Tahiti too… Not sure I can do a $28 fish sandwich along with that almost $8 Coke… Let alone and nothing else! Went through Water Spout one time on Dog Island … painful as hell as we took cover on underneath one of the houses but the water still found us and hit us sideways and hard! Hoping you have a wonderful time and that we will catch up sometime and somewhere! Heading out of town Sunday! 😂

    1. We are getting on the Oceania Nautica and we will be on for 75 days. It is actually three cruises put together and people will get on and off in Auckland and then Moore in Singapore and we will stay on to Cape Town. Once we get off in Cape Town, we will do an eight day safari, including Victoria Falls and Kruger national Park.
This is one of Oceania smaller ships. Only hold 650.

        1. We will spend two nights in Cape Town and leave for Victoria Falls on May 23. Will spend two nights at the Falls and then go to Kruger national Park for another four nights.
