We had an uneventful sea day after leaving Reykjavik. The weather was cloudy and cold and you did not want to spend a lot of time on deck. We are appreciating the cooler weather and know it will end once we hit Spain and Portugal. Reykjavik is on the west coast of Iceland and our Seydisfjorgur is on the East coast so that is why a day in-between ports.
You can see our path around the island. Popular time for cruise ships in Iceland.
We continue to have very smooth seas and when we woke up we were already anchored in the fjord leading to Seydisfjordur. It is a beautiful place to visit but I cannot imagine living here.
The town of Seydisfjordur.
The town is at the end of a fjord and surrounded by snow capped mountains and waterfalls. The town has 750 residents. Our cruise ship was a little too big for the dock they have so we had to tender in but it was a very short tender ride. There were several waterfalls that you could walk to right by the town.
2 of the nearby waterfalls.
Our boat in the fjord
This “boat” was right where the tender dropped us off. I thought it was picturesque.
The town was very nice and easy to walk around with lots of colorful buildings.
A couple of the painted buildings. Almost all the buildings have metal siding. Back in 2020 there was a huge landslide that buried a lot of the town. They are now spending millions of dollars to make a giant concrete wall to prevent further landslides. I confess I think it would be easier to move and a lot less expensive.
More of the town
We are not sure how much the locals appreciate the cruise ships. We were like ants crawling all over the town and most yards had “no trespassing” signs up. There were a few souvenir stores that sold local products but we live in Florida so not much need for winter sweaters.
They had their own rainbow street leading to the only church. Some art made from driftwood.
We took a couple of walks up to the waterfalls and enjoyed the wildflowers which were everywhere.
Wildflowers and also playing with the new camera.
We spent a few hours walking around and finally ran out of things to do. There was 1 small grocery store in town that we heard was packed with cruise ship passengers and crew and I can only imagine how the cruise ship throws off the ordering of supplies for the grocery stores. We are not even sure where the closest town is.
The view of the town from one of the hikes. The buildings in the picture is a sculpture that is supposed to represent 5 tones of Nordic music. Not really sure but when you walked into them they did have a good echo inside.
Everything is very green
The sail out was very pretty. The fjord is not long but at slow speeds it took us about and hour to get to the open water.
Views from the fjord
Some farms at the base of the mountains. We did not see any animals but we heard that they raise sheep.
More waterfalls
The Icelandic coast as we hit the open ocean. The ocean was very smooth.
We have another day at sea as we cross the Atlantic to Stornoway, Scotland.
We love reading about your trip and looking at the pictures! You mentioned a new camera – what did you get?
I had a Nikon D810 with several lenses and I broke down and got the Nikon Z7ii with the 28 to 400mm lens. So 1 lens instead of multiple and camera and lens are much lighter because it is the mirrorless camera. Still learning how to use it.
Sounds like a great combination for travel!
