New York City Day 1

Tuesday July 2, 2024

We had a great day in the city. The temperature was mid 80s and there was a nice breeze so not too hot. We got up at 4:30am for our 7am flight. Our new trick, which Kathy thought of a few flights ago, is to rent a car the day before and then we can return it to the airport. That way we are not inconveniencing anyone with an early flight and the cost is actually cheaper than a taxi ride. Plus you don’t have to worry about the ride/taxi showing up on time.

All flights were on time and we had a great taxi ride into the city. We got to the hotel a little before 1pm and surprisingly our room was ready. After a few minutes in the room we headed out into the city with no plans except a show at 7pm. We went to one of my favorite delicatessens, 2nd Avenue Deli, and had lunch which included several New York dill pickles. After lunch we wandered down 34th street and browsed through B&H, Macys and H&M. Mainly we just people watched.

Times Square

We had tickets to see MJ the Musical and it was at 7pm. We had tickets to see this show in September but we got held up in Charlotte for 2 nights and missed 2 Broadway shows.

Great show

The show was great and it reminded you how much great music Micheal Jackson had. The show highlighted how exacting and involved he was with all his shows and also how tortured he was. It was an interesting view of Micheal. The actor/singer who played him did an amazing job and when he first walked out you really thought it was Michael.

After the show we had reservations at another of our favorites, Nobu on 57th. We try to branch out and get different things but we have our favorites and hard to deviate from those.

Yellow tail sashimi with jalapeño, cilantro and ponzu sauce. It is amazing and we usually have to get 2 orders. Plus the fried rice squares with spicy avocado are to die for.

After dinner we were going to catch the subway back to the hotel but it was such a nice night we ended up walking the 2 miles back.

The Helmsley building, Chrysler building and Empire State Building (dressed up for the 4th)

We ended up walking almost 10 miles on our first day in the city.
